The original medieval settlement of Syros
Ano Syros was built during the Venetian occupation from 1204-1522 as the original settlement of Syros.
It was built in a circular order, with the outer buildings creating a fortification around narrow labyrinth alleyways. This maze-like structure allowed the village to protect itself from pirate attacks.
When Ermoupoli was built as an extension of Ano Syros, Ano Syros ceased to be the administrative centre of Syros.
Nowadays, Ano Syros continues to flourish as a religious centre and also as a visitor's hotspot. Take your time to get delightfully lost in the winding sokakis of the historical village!
